The recent proclamation of several Basque towns as 'Smart Tourist Destinations' (DTI) marks an important milestone in tourism in the Basque Country, this recognition announced at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), is the result of a collaborative effort led by Basquetour and Segittur, Bidasoa, Bilbao, Busturialdea-Urdaibai, Debagoiena, Getxo and Valles Alaveses now stand out not only for its beauty and cultural heritage, but also for its commitment to innovation, technology, sustainability, accessibility and governance.

Since Bilbao joined the network of Smart Tourist Destinations In 2019, the city has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in the tourism sector. This project, which ended in 2022, has led the capital of Biscay to consolidate its position as a benchmark in the application of the DTI methodology. Thanks to a comprehensive diagnostic process completed in 2023, Bilbao has not only strengthened its tourism offer, but has also laid the foundations for sustainable and responsible development.

Bilbao has become a role model, not only for Basque cities, but for tourist destinations around the world. Its success demonstrates how the integration of technology and sustainability, together with effective management, can transform the tourist experience, making it richer, more accessible and more environmentally friendly.

Innovation and collaboration: The keys to success in Euskadi

Busturialdea-Urdaibai has stood out for its collaborative approach, working hand in hand with the private tourism sector and articulating working groups in various areas, such as the 'European Charter for Sustainable Tourism'. This collaboration has been fundamental for the rural and economic development of the region, with the key support of Basquetour and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.

On the other hand, Debagoiena, Bidasoa, Bilbao and Getxo have also completed their transformations into Smart Tourist Destinations, standing out for the creation of experiential tourism products, the promotion of gastronomic tourism and a strong commitment to sustainability. These initiatives not only improve the visitor experience, but also benefit local communities, creating more inclusive and respectful tourism.

The Valles Alaveses Region, By receiving this distinction, it takes a significant step on its path towards more innovative and avant-garde tourism. These destinations, along with others already recognized, position Euskadi as a leader in the tourism field, offering visitors unique experiences with high added value.
