Are they letting Basurto Hospital die?

The lack of investment and the uncertain future of the hospital worry healthcare professionals

35 heads of service of the Hospital de basurto have spread a letter on social networks in which they denounce that the Basque Department of Health maintains a "harmful politics" in relation to this center. The professionals point out the lack of investment in the hospital and compare it with other Basque centers where reforms are carried out and state-of-the-art equipment is acquired.

Years of neglect aggravated by the pandemic

Although this situation has been dragging on for years, professionals assure that the stoppage of investments and projects it has worsened since the attempt to eliminate Cardiac Surgery in the Basurto hospital. Dr. González Torres, head of the psychiatry unit and one of the signatories of the letter, affirms that there is no clear plan for the future of the hospital and demands answers from the authorities.

Maintain excellence in care

The Basurto Hospital awaits the final judicial decision on the transfer of the Cardiac Surgery service to the Cruces Hospital. Meanwhile, the professionals assure that the interventions continue to be carried out on a daily basis. “with the same excellent results as always”. Dr. González Torres stresses that the objective is to maintain the quality of the hospital and offer excellent care to the citizens of Bilbao.

Concern about waiting lists and lack of beds

In the letter, the professionals also express their concern about the waiting lists. Despite the fact that the number of operations has increased, Osakidetza has not increased the number of beds in the critical care area. This situation is especially serious for professionals, since Basurto has fewer critical care beds per population than the rest of the Osakidetza organizations.

Lack of response from the institutions

The signatories of the letter state that they have requested information from the general director of Osakidetza, Rosa Pérez, about her plans for the Basurto Hospital, without obtaining a response. They compare the situation with that of San Sebastián, where the professionals have already met with Pérez. In addition, they denounce the passivity of the mayor of Bilbao, Juan María Aburto, in the face of the defense of the hospital carried out by the mayor of San Sebastián, Eneko Goia.
