Four Basques secure their place in the new European Parliament

The new European Parliament will have four Basque representatives after the June 9 elections

The recent election day of June 9 brought with it significant representation for Basques in the European Parliament. With a total of four seats, the Basque Country ensures an active voice in the decisions of the European Parliament. These seats will be occupied by Oihane Agirregoitia from the PNV, Pernando Barrena from EH Bildu, Idoia Mendia from the PSOE and Javier Zarzalejos from the PP. Each of them brings with them a solid track record and political experience that promises to strengthen the Basque presence in Europe.

Oihane Agirregoitia, 43 years old, is a technical engineer in Industrial Electronics and Industrial Organization Engineering, graduated from the University of Deusto. Her political career began in 2011 as a councilor for the Bilbao City Council. representing the EAJ-PNV. For 12 years, he has managed various municipal areas, providing his experience in the field of ICT and customer service. Agirregoitia leads the 'Coalition for a Europe of Solidarity' (CEUS), a platform that includes the Canarian Coalition, Geroa Bai, PI Balear and Atarrabia, among others.

Pernando Barrena's experience in the European Parliament

Pernando Barrena, 59, has been a key figure in Basque politics. A translator by profession, Barrena was a member of the National Board of Herri Batasuna and the Batasuna leadership, as well as a Navarrese parliamentarian for Euskal Herritarrok. Since 2019, he has played an active role as an MEP, representing EH Bildu within the 'Now Republics' candidacy. This coalition brings together parties such as ERC, BNG and Ara Més de Baleares, promoting a republican agenda in the European Parliament.

Idoia Mendia: from vice president to MEP

Idoia Mendia, also 59 years old, has a degree in Law from the University of Deusto. Her career in the PSE-EE began in 1993,In 2002 he won a seat in the Basque Parliament. She was a spokesperson for the Government and Minister of Justice., Public Administration under Lehendakari Patxi López, and later, head of the Interior in 2012. From 2014 to 2021, Mendia was general secretary of the PSE-EE. In 2020, she assumed the position of vice-lehendakari and Minister of Labor and Employment of the Basque Government, until her recent designation as a candidate for the European lists of the PSOE.

Javier Zarzalejos: a career in European administration and politics

Javier Zarzalejos, a Law graduate from the University of Deusto, has had a distinguished career in administration and politics. He was a member of the Superior Body of Civil Administrators of the State, Information Counselor at the Spanish Embassy in the United Kingdom and general secretary of the Presidency of the Government of Spain. Since 2019, Zarzalejos has been a member of the European Parliament, representing the PP in the European People's Party Group. His experience at the FAES Foundation and other responsibilities strengthen his profile as an MEP.

These four Basque representatives bring a rich combination of experience and commitment to the European Parliament, ensuring that the voice of the Basque Country is heard in Europe over the next five years.
