Bilbao celebrates its Aste Nagusia once again with joy and jubilation

Bilbao, the vibrant Basque city, has once again become the epicenter of festivities and celebrations with the start of the Aste Nagusia, also known as Big Week. Thousands of people have gathered in the Plaza del Arriaga and its surroundings to welcome Marijaia, the iconic symbol of these festivities that attract visitors from all over.

The beginning of the festivities

The 43rd edition of the Aste Nagusia has had a spectacular start. The festivities have been inaugurated with the launch of the "txupin", a rocket that marks the beginning of the festivities. Right after the outbreak of the txupin, Marijaia has made her stellar appearance on the balcony of the Arriaga theater, with her arms always raised from her, to the sound of the song dedicated to her by Kepa junkera.

The wait is over for thousands of Bilbao residents and visitors who have been waiting for this moment for months. With blazing sunshine and 30 degree temperatures, the city has erupted in jubilation.

Special acts for a special edition

This edition of the Aste Nagusia has a special significance, since it coincides with the 40 anniversary of the floods of 1983, which tragically interrupted the festivities of that year. Although this year there are no floods, the memory of those events is still alive in the memory of the people of Bilbao.

The singer of the rock group Zea Mays, Aiora Renteria, has sung an original proclamation to animate the party. Aiora has been accompanied on the balcony of the Arriaga by the Councilor for Fiestas de Bilbao, Itziar Urtasún, and the txupinera Izaskun Pinedo.

A program full of activities for all tastes

The Aste Nagusia is known for its wide variety of activities, and this year is no exception. More than a thousand events have been programmed for all audiences, including concerts, musical performances, parades, competitions and much more. Bilbao City Council and the Bilboko Konpartsak organization have scheduled more than 100 musical performances for the next nine days.

The city offers a program full of activities for all tastes and ages. Among the outstanding activities are the concerts organized by Gaztea Gaua, which include a concert by ZETAK in Parque Europa next Thursday, August 24.

Remembering last year's historic edition

Last year, Aste Nagusia had a historic edition, with record numbers and more than 1.600.000 attendees. They were the first festivities in the town after the pandemic, and this year the festivities are expected to be just as well attended.

The Aste Nagusia is a celebration that defines Bilbao and its people. With their energy and enthusiasm, the people of Bilbao demonstrate year after year their ability to celebrate life and enjoy the company of family and friends. This year, the city once again vibrates with the music, color and joy of its most important festival.
