A 58-year-old woman has been admitted to the Major Burn Unit of the Cruces hospital after being attacked by her ex-partner in Deusto, Bilbao.

The Ertzaintza has arrested today, in the Deusto neighborhood in Bilbao, a 63-year-old man accused of assaulting and causing severe burns to his ex-partner, apparently, by setting fire to his clothing. The victim, a 58-year-old woman, has been rushed to Cruces hospital.

As reported by the Department of Security of the Basque Government, shortly before 16:00 p.m., residents of a Bilbao building alerted of the presence of a seriously injured woman in the place, apparently as a result of an attack.

Police and health teams have gone to the scene, verifying that the victim presented severe burns and bruises in different parts of the body, which has made it necessary to evacuate them to the Cruces hospital.

It has been confirmed that the cause of the injuries had been his ex-partner, who in the course of an altercation that occurred at the victim's home had set fire to his clothing.

The alleged attacker has been arrested at the scene and transferred to police stations to carry out the relevant procedures.

The woman, admitted to the Major Burns Unit of the Cruces hospital, lived in the house where the events occurred in the Deusto neighborhood for about 15 years and has a daughter, whose father is the alleged aggressor, according to residents of the property to EFE.

One of the neighbors, who put out the fire in the woman's dress, said that the relationship between the two was problematic, with frequent arguments and that the woman had thrown her ex-partner out of the house on more than one occasion. However, they never thought that she could go to such lengths.

This neighbor recounts that, upon hearing screams in the victim's apartment, he went to the place and saw the woman engulfed in flames. So, he grabbed a towel and threw it over the woman, managing to put out the fire.

After learning of the brutal attack, the delegate of the Spanish Government in the Basque Country, Denis Itxaso, has expressed his rejection in a message on his social networks in which he describes the attack as "atrocious" and "inhuman". "It is only possible to trust in his recovery and invite the public to show their most forceful social condemnation," he concluded.

This terrible event highlights the need to continue fighting against gender violence and to protect the victims of this type of aggression. Society as a whole must show its rejection of these acts and work to eradicate gender violence.
