The inhabitants of Ondarroa have shown once again that Antxoa Eguna It remains a strong celebration rooted in its community. This May 18, the 23rd Antxoa Eguna has once again filled the streets of the Old Town with life and color, where the crowd gathered early to participate in the festivities. Despite initial fears about the weather, at 11:00 in the morning, the sun was already shining over the city, marking the official start of the party and the antxoas tasting.

A Feast of Flavors and Tradition

Community collaboration has been the basis of this event, with 500 kilos of antxoa used to prepare more than 1000 pintxos sold in bars and more than 3500 in stalls. The members of the Pixapeko association, for example, worked for four days to prepare 1200 croquettes, which were sold out before 14:30 p.m. In addition to croquettes, local associations offered antxoas prepared in various ways: tenpura by Arranondo, ojaelan by Eskilintxarri, pudding and empanadillas by Galizia Etxea, and pla-pla by Gau Hontzak. In total, 26 bars in the town also participated in the distribution of pintxos.

Recognition of the Antxustegi Family

At 14:00 p.m., the Antxustegi family gathered to receive the Zilarrezko Antxoa (Silver Antxoa) granted by the Ondarroa City Council. This recognition was granted to them for their work in preserving the maritime and cultural heritage of the town, highlighting their work in the restoration of the Antxustegi Berria txalupa. This ship, built in 1958 at the Arriola shipyard in Ondarroa, was donated to the Itsasmuseum in 1997 and its reconstruction began in 2018, with plans to finish in 2025. The family emphasized the importance of preserving the heritage, identity and landscape of Ondarroa, following the motto “Zaindu maite duzun hori” (Take care of what you love).

Music and Celebration

Music has also been an essential component of the day. Various groups and choirs, including the children's choir directed by Yolanda Loira, offered performances throughout the day. To culminate the celebration, Musika Square was the scene of a lively pilgrimage with the Urrats group.

Antxoa Eguna 2024 has been, without a doubt, a resounding success, demonstrating the vitality and community spirit of Ondarroa. The combination of tradition, gastronomy and music has created a festive atmosphere that strengthens the ties between the inhabitants and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the town.
