Legal experts meet at the Gernika Board House for the UPV/EHU summer course

The Gernika-Lumo Meeting House will be the setting for the UPV/EHU Summer Course on the history and politics of pactism

On June 24 and 25, the Gernika-Lumo Board House will host a summer course on University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) titled «Past, present and future of pactism. History and politics beyond myth. This event, which has the support of the General Meetings of Bizkaia, is part of the UPV/EHU Summer Courses program and will focus on the evolution and practice of pactism as a form of political organization since the Middle Ages to the present.

This course is aimed at university students, professionals and representatives of the General Meetings and the Provincial Council.

Directed by Mikel Mancisidor de la Fuente and Itziar Lizeaga Romero, the course is designed for a wide spectrum of participants, including university students, professionals and staff of the General Meetings and the Provincial Council. The objective is to examine the distinctive characteristics of pactism that have defined the political-legal identity of the Basque Country throughout history. Furthermore, the organizers wish to offer a contemporary view of pactism, identifying its key characteristics and potential future relevance.

Among the featured speakers are Gregorio Monreal Cia from the Public University of Navarra, Andoni Artola Renedo from the UPV/EHU, José Luis Aurtenetxe, former senior lawyer of the General Meetings, Alejandro Saiz Arnaiz from the Pompeu Fabra University, Jesús Morales from the University from Zaragoza, Xavier Gil from the University of Barcelona and Josu Erkoreka from the Basque Government. These experts will contribute their knowledge and perspectives on the topic, enriching the discussions and analysis of the course.

The course will provide both a historical and contemporary perspective on pactism.

In addition, the course will be structured into several presentations and round tables that will explore different facets of pactism. Its evolution will be analyzed from its medieval roots to its impact on various historical periods and its relevance in contemporary politics. Attendees will have the opportunity to understand how pactism has influenced the political and social structure of the Basque Country and how it can continue to be relevant in the future.
