Petronor and innovation in renewable hydrogen with electrolyzer in Euskadi

Petronor, with the support of Repsol, sets a standard in the transition towards energies cleaner with the inauguration of its first electrolyzer in Euskadi marking an energy revolution. This structure, located in the heart of the Muskiz industrial complex, is a vibrant testimony to technological advances and commitment to the environment.

The use of green hydrogen is projected as a sustainable alternative with potential to reduce carbon footprint. Petronor's initiative is not only a pioneer in the region, but also stands out for being one of the first to use European technology in the production of renewable hydrogen.

Technical details and environmental benefits

The electrolyzer has a capacity of 2,5 MW, which translates into an approximate production of 350 tons of renewable hydrogen annually. This represents a significant contribution to the industry, offering a raw material that considerably reduces the environmental impact.

The water electrolysis process, used to obtain hydrogen, is carried out using electrical energy of 100% renewable origin. This technique not only guarantees efficient production, but also minimizes CO2 emissions.

Investments and applications

With an investment of 11 million euros, the project not only seeks to satisfy the needs of the Petronor refinery. It also has an eye on the future, pointing to diversify renewable hydrogen applications.

An example of this is its contribution to the Abanto Zierbena Technology Park, where hydrogen is used to move public transport, including buses and heavy vehicles. This park, located a short distance from the electrolyzer, also benefits from the first hydro station of the Basque Autonomous Community, installed thanks to the collaboration between Repsol and the Basque Energy Agency.

Recognitions and projections

The president of Petronor, Emiliano López Atxurra, has emphasized the importance of this achievement, highlighting the technical excellence and determination of the team involved. This electrolyzer not only represents an innovation in itself, but is also a testimony of the learning and the path traveled in search of sustainable solutions.

For his part, the CEO of Repsol, Joshua Jon Imaz, underlines that this initiative should act as a catalyst, driving innovation and transforming European industry for future generations.

Energy revolution in Euskadi and its renewable commitment

The lehendakari urkullu has recognized the effort and vision of the future of Petronor and Repsol. Euskadi, with its rich history in innovation, is once again positioned at the forefront, defending a model of renewable energies and collaboration between the public and private sectors.

In conclusion, the inauguration of this electrolyzer in Euskadi marks a milestone in the energy transition and environmental commitment. With initiatives like this, the future of green hydrogen in Europe looks promising and hopeful.
