The arrival of the first northern albacore marks the beginning of the fishing season in Euskadi, with Bermeo receiving 6.500 kilos

The northern albacore season in Euskadi has officially begun with the arrival of the first copies to the Basque ports. Yesterday, The San Pedro de Bermeo fishermen's brotherhood received a total of 6.500 kilos of this precious species, captured by the local fishing vessel Izurdia Maitea in the waters of the Atlantic.

This first landing is significant not only for its quantity, but also for the quality of the fish. More than half of the bonito auctioned yesterday in Bermeo exceeded 7 kilos, reaching prices that ranged between 8,20 and 9,86 euros per kilo. These large specimens are especially valued by buyers due to their excellent quality and flavor.

Albacore tuna moves towards the Cantabrian Sea and the Bay of Bizkaia

The northern albacore, also known as albacore tuna, performs a trophic migration at this time of year. Starting from the Atlantic, the schools They head towards the Cantabrian Sea and the Bay of Bizkaia in search of food. The first catches of the season were made about 200 miles northeast of the Azores Islands, but now the bonito have begun to move eastwards, approaching the Basque coasts.

With the proximity of the fishing areas, it is expected that in the coming days and weeks there will be significant arrivals of bonito in Euskadi. The Bermeo brotherhood anticipates the arrival of another boat with nearly 10.000 kilos of tuna tomorrow, which portends a promising season for both fishermen and local buyers.
