You can now request a vote by mail for the General Elections: What you need to know

The Deadline for the Vote by Mail Application is Open

Citizens can now request to vote by mail for the next general elections on July 23, according to the official call published in the BOE. The deadline to submit the application will be until July 13, a procedure that can be carried out at any office of the Postal Service.

This announcement comes in a particular context, the general elections will be held during the summer holidays, a first in Spanish political history.

Increased Use of Vote by Mail

In the recent elections on May 28, a total of more than 984.000 citizens who opted for voting by mail, showing an increase of 6,4% compared to the 2019 elections. However, this modality has been involved in various controversies, raising questions about the possible purchase of votes.

The Vote by Mail Application Process

The application to vote by mail must be made in person and the national identity document must be presented. The application form can be download on the website of the Ministry of the Interior and appear electronically on the Post Office page or in person at an office. Subsequently, the necessary documentation is received at the applicant's home.

Once the ballot is selected and the corresponding envelope is closed, it is inserted into another envelope addressed to the Electoral Table. It is important to remember that once the vote by mail has been cast, the voter can no longer vote in person.

Voting by Mail for Citizens Abroad

The Electoral Census Office automatically sends all documentation to citizens residing abroad. They will be able to vote by certified mail or deposit their vote in the ballot boxes set up in embassies, consulates or designated centers until July 20.
