The general coordinator of EH Bildu, Arnaldo Otegi, has celebrated what he described as a "historic night" in which Pernando Barrena, number two in the Ahora Repúblicas candidacy, has managed to revalidate his position as a European parliamentarian in the elections to the European Parliament this Sunday.

The celebration of EH Bildu in Pamplona

Otegi appeared after 23:20 p.m. at the Hotel Catedral in Pamplona, where the Abertzale coalition monitored the election night, to assess the results of Ahora Repúblicas (Orain Errepublikak), a coalition in which EH Bildu is located together with ERC and BNG, which has obtained three MEPs.

The leader of the nationalist coalition has pointed out that in the last elections, he posed "a challenge on a personal level and a dream, and that was for the Basque people" to name Pernando Barrena as "ambassador" in Europe. The "second dream fulfilled", he added, is that EH Bildu has been "the first political force" in what he has defined as "maritime Navarre" made up of Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia and Álava.

Otegi thanked all the people who have worked on the campaign, the "young people of this country", the working people and the activists "who make the change of political cycle in this country possible." While waiting to make a "calmer" analysis of the electoral results this Monday, he highlighted that "today is a historic night."

"We are going to be a bulwark against the extreme right"

Pernando Barrena, who has managed to revalidate his position as an MEP within the Ahora Repúblicas coalition, has highlighted that EH Bildu "is going to be a bulwark against the extreme right" in Europe and is going to defend, together with "other nations without a State, the right to exist." of Euskal Herria.

Barrena and Otegi received applause and cheers from those in attendance, among whom were the main representatives of the coalition.

"It is confirmed that EH Bildu and the country will have representation this term in Brussels," said Barrena, who admitted that the electoral results reveal "a very worrying presence of the extreme right."

In this regard, he has warned that "it is going to be a legislature where the progressive forces, the leftist forces, the forces of the nations without a State, are going to have to face a tendency towards austericide, a tendency towards the growth of States to the detriment of the European project and warmongering temptations to lead the people of Europe into a war that no one wants. "EH Bildu is going to be a bulwark against the extreme right," he said.

In the same way, he stressed that he will defend in Brussels, "with other nations without a State, the right to exist of the Basque Country." "A victory for everyone, for this country and for the free future of all Basques," is how they described it.
