The Artxanda Funicular is in the midst of a renovation process, transforming into a modern and sustainable infrastructure. The work seeks to modernize the facilities, making them more functional and attractive for users., while becoming more operational and energy efficient. This project is part of the Territorial Tourism Sustainability Plan of Euskadi, financed by the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism Funds, Next Generation EU. The rehabilitation includes the installation of 220 photovoltaic panels and a vertical garden that absorbs 15,25 tons of CO2 per year, reducing energy consumption by 80%.

The Artxanda Funicular advances with the rehabilitation of its upper station, transforming the public area of ​​the building to adapt to new transportation needs and accessibility. The modernization includes the installation of canceling doors, validators and convenience commerce areas, improving operations and the experience of users. With these improvements, the funicular becomes a third generation infrastructure, prepared for the 21st century and capable of responding to the expected growth of Mount Artxanda.

A funicular prepared for the future: Facts and figures of success

The Artxanda Funicular closed 2023 with a record of 1.134.152 travelers. This year, the number of users has increased by 5,18% compared to the previous year. To meet this demand, in March the frequency of trips between 11:00 and 20:00 was increased to every 10 minutes., and every 15 minutes the rest of the day. At times of high traffic, the trip begins when the carriages reach a capacity of 60 people, guaranteeing an efficient service adapted to the needs of users.

The Artxanda Funicular operates every weekday from 7:15 a.m. to 22:00 p.m. and on holidays from 8:15 a.m. to 22:00 p.m. During the summer months, the service is extended until 23:00 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of holidays. In just over three minutes, it travels 770,34 meters at a speed of 5 meters per second (18 km/h), with a capacity of 70 people per car. In addition, it offers free guided tours in Spanish and Basque, increasing its value as a tourist and cultural attraction.

The Artxanda Funicular has been recognized with the Traveler Choice 2023 by TripAdvisor, an award awarded for favorable user opinions. This recognition underlines the importance and positive impact of this historic infrastructure in Bilbao, highlighting its relevance at an international level.
