Konfekoop General Assembly: praising the Basque cooperative model

Inigo Urkullu, Lehendakari of the Basque Government, has been in charge of opening the General Assembly of konfekoop, the Confederation of Cooperatives of Euskadi. During his speech, he thanked and recognized the efforts of the Basque cooperatives in recent years, marked by "uncertainty and difficulty".

Urkullu has defended "community and collective work" as the key to continue growing and generating employment opportunities. The Basque cooperative model has become a "benchmark for security, stability and guarantee", and the Lehendakari has advocated continuing to advance in it.

Collective and cooperative commitment

The leader of the Basque Government has emphasized that The Basque Country cannot and should not face its future through the mere sum of individualisms. Instead, he has highlighted that collective and cooperative commitment is fundamental to maintaining the quality of life, social cohesion and well-being in the region.

Urkullu thanked the cooperatives for their commitment and effort in difficult times, and expressed his conviction that "by joining forces" they will come closer to achieving "everyone's objectives".

Economic growth and employment

The Lehendakari has indicated that, despite the challenges, The Basque Country has managed to stay afloat and is now experiencing economic growth. He has cited the latest economic forecasts that point to an increase of 1,5% in 2023 and 2,1% in 2024. Furthermore, full-time jobs are expected to increase by 0,9% in both years.

Basque cooperatives: a pillar in the regional economy

Cooperatives have been a fundamental pillar of the Basque economy during decades. They have demonstrated their ability to adapt and overcome difficulties, contributing to the sustainable and equitable development of the region. These organizations represent a business model that prioritizes participation, economic democracy and social justice.

Success of cooperatives: the case of Mondragón

One of the most outstanding examples of success in the Basque cooperative sphere is the Mondragon Corporation, the largest cooperative business group in the world. Founded in 1956, it has demonstrated the viability and sustainability of the cooperative model in various sectors, from industry and distribution to education and research.

A promising future

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu has made it clear that the future of the Basque Country depends on continuing to promote and support the cooperative model. Collaboration and teamwork will be essential to face the economic and social challenges that arise.
