Slight upturn in Bizkaia in sales in large stores and food chains (February 2023)

Sales in large commercial areas and food chains in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country have registered a decrease of 0,6% in February 2023 compared to the same month of the previous year, according to data provided by Eustat. This setback in sales is also observed in the comparison with the previous month, January 2023, where a decrease of 1,0% was registered at constant prices.

Negative evolution in both sectors

Both in Food and in Other products, sales have decreased in month-on-month and year-on-year terms. In February 2023, sales in Food fell by 0,4% compared to February 2022 and by 0,5% compared to January 2023. On the other hand, sales in Other products experienced a drop of 1,0 % compared to February 2022 and 1,8% compared to the previous month.

As for the provinces, sales in large stores and food chains presented notable variations. In Bizkaia, an interannual growth of 0,5% was observed in February 2023. However, in Álava and Gipuzkoa, sales experienced a decrease of 6,1% and 0,1%, respectively, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar.

In relation to January 2023, that is, in month-on-month terms, sales increased in Gipuzkoa by 0,3%, while in Álava and Bizkaia there were decreases of 2,2% and 1,4%, respectively.

Increase in employed staff

The staff employed in large stores and food chains in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country experienced an increase of 4,0% compared to February 2022. On a month-on-month basis, the headcount index increased 0,1%.
