El Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and the Basque Socialist Party (PSE-EE) They have taken the initiative to try to control the political landscape in the main Basque institutions, even with the possibility of displacing EH Bildu. They have launched a concerted approach to maximize their influence, a move that puts the balance of power at stake in places like the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.

Understanding the political game

The Gipuzkoa Provincial Council has become a strategic battlefield, with the PNV-PSE coalition seeking support from the Popular Party (PP) to guarantee its control. With 24 seats in their possession, two away from an absolute majority, they require the help of the three PP junteros to achieve their goal.

In this environment, the PP seems willing to collaborate in the operation, with the aim of preventing EH Bildu, the independence party, from governing Gipuzkoa. This alliance could lead to Eider Mendoza, from the PNV, being sworn in as deputy general of Gipuzkoa, and Maider Etxeberria, from the PSE-EE, taking office as mayoress of Vitoria.

EH Bildu at the crossroads

These moves are a setback for EH Bildu, who had achieved solid support in the last elections. However, despite its success, it has not gained enough strength to form an absolute majority in parliament. Now, the PNV and the PSE-EE are trying to take advantage of this situation to reassert their political influence.

The picture is further complicated if we consider that Elkarrekin Podemos could support Maddalen Iriarte from EH Bildu as deputy general. However, the possibility of this happening will depend to a great extent on the role that the PP decides to play in the political negotiations.

The PP: An unexpected role

The Popular Party is in an interesting position. Although he initially seemed to have little chance of influencing Basque politics, his seats in parliament give him a strategic position. Although the PP is not asking for major concessions, it seems willing to support the PNV-PSE-EE coalition, not so much to boost Eider Mendoza, but to prevent EH Bildu from assuming power.

The complexity of Basque politics

Politics in the Basque Country is a dynamic board, where alliances can change rapidly depending on the interests of the parties. The PNV and the PSE-EE seek to strengthen their coalition, but its success will depend to a large extent on the collaboration of the PP, and on how the political negotiations develop in the coming weeks.
