ABAO Bilbao Opera reveals its 2024/2025 season

SESSAO3 of ABAO Bilbao Opera marked by classic and contemporary productions

Under the motto “Irresistibly opera”, the 73rd Season of ABAO Bilbao Opera is presented as an unprecedented spectacle that will capture the essence of the lyric through consecrated voices and innovative montages. The season starts on October 19 with the work Don Pasquale by Donizetti, under a new vision by Emiliano Suárez. This event will not only mark the beginning of the season, but will also highlight the interpretive ability of figures such as Simón Orfila and Maria José Moreno, directed by the expert baton of Sesto Quatrini.

The season will continue with the celebration of Puccini's centenary through the programming of Il Trittico, an operatic triptych that will be performed for the first time at ABAO. This cycle stands out for the participation of Carlos Álvarez, Ángeles Blancas and Marco Berti in Il Tabarro; Chiara Isotton and Karita Mattila in Suor Angelica; and Carlos Álvarez alongside Sofía Esparza in Gianni Schicchi. This series of works will be directed by Paco Azorín and Pedro Halffter, promising a perfect fusion between voice and scene.

El Intense drama of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde will take the stage between January 18 and 27, 2025. Under the musical direction of Erik Nielsen and stage direction of Allex Aguilera, the opera will explore themes of love and tragedy with a cast that includes Gwytn Hughes Jones, Oksana Dyka and Daniela Barcellona. This production promises to be a highlight of the season due to its deep emotional charge and musical complexity.

February will bring us Donizetti's La Favorite, with a cast that includes Silvia Tro Santafé, Ismael Jordi and Vladimir Stoyanov. This production, directed by Valentina Carrasco and under the baton of Riccardo Frizza, is emerging as an essential for opera lovers thanks to its intense narrative and the vocal quality of its performers.

La season will conclude with Verdi's Otello, from May 17 to 26, highlighting Jorge de León, Ermonela Jaho and Claudio Sgura in the main roles. The interpretation of this classic, directed by Ignacio García and Francesco Ivan Ciampa, ensures a closing with a flourish, offering an unforgettable experience full of passion and operatic mastery.

La ABAO Bilbao Opera 2024/2025 season not only celebrates the greatness of classical opera, but also introduces new productions that challenge the traditional boundaries of the genre. With a mix of international talent and bold stage offerings, this season is designed to captivate both long-time fans and new viewers, consolidating the ABAO as a reference in the cultural panorama of Bilbao and beyond.
