The world premiere of Saturraran at the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao promises a unique experience with a libretto in Basque written by Kirmen Uribe

The Arriaga Theater is preparing for an unprecedented cultural event: the world premiere of the contemporary opera “Saturraran”. Composed by Juan Carlos Pérez and with a libretto in Basque by Kirmen Uribe, this work will be presented to the public on Thursday, June 20 and Saturday, June 22. This project has the collaboration of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, making it a significant event for Basque culture.

First-class artistic and musical direction, with an innovative and emotional staging

Lucía Astigarraga, stage director, has chosen for an abstract aesthetic that highlights the beauty of simplicity, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that complements the libretto in Basque. Jon Malaxetxebarria, musical director, will lead the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa (BOS) in this sonic adventure. The opera will feature a cast of eight solo voices, including Elías Arranz and Andrea Jiménez, who will take on the main roles. The cast is completed by Marifé Nogales, José Manuel Díaz, Botond Ódor, Aitor Garitano, Itxaro Mentxaka and Iñigo Fernández, forming a high-quality vocal group.

The Bilbao Choral Society will also play a crucial role, providing more than 40 choralists under the direction of Enrique Azurza. The vocal and choral strength of the opera is essential to convey the emotional intensity of the story.

The set design, by German Philip Rubner, offers a visually striking space that reflects both infinity and claustrophobia. Ibai Labega has designed a timeless and fantastical wardrobe, inspired by Ondarroa's clothing in the 80s. For his part, Alberto Rodríguez Vega will be in charge of the lighting design., using lights to create atmospheres and reflect atmospheric phenomena, further enriching the visual experience.

The plot of Saturraran focuses on Ane and Luna, two women who fall in love in a time marked by the decline of fishing and the rise of heroin and AIDS. Ane, daughter of a fisherman, and Luna, a recently arrived Andalusian, They face rejection from society and find refuge in the ruins of the Saturraran prison.. The opera is a tribute to the generation that fought for freedom in difficult times, highlighting the beauty of what is different and the courage to love despite everything.

The legend that inspires this opera speaks of two lovers turned into rocks after their tragic fate. The work of Juan Carlos Pérez and Kirmen Uribe captures this essence, transporting the viewer to a time and place full of challenges and hope.
