Hamas's armed wing has claimed it captured Israeli soldiers during fighting in Jabalia, northern Gaza, last Saturday. However, the Israeli military has denied this claim.

Hamas statements

Hamas military wing spokesman Abu Ubaida said Sunday that his fighters had captured Israeli soldiers during a clash in Jabalia. According to Ubaida, his fighters ambushed an Israeli force inside a tunnel, managing to leave all its members dead, wounded or captured. This statement was broadcast by Al Jazeera.

Israeli army response

The Israeli military categorically denied Hamas' claim. In a statement, the army clarified that "there is no incident in which a soldier has been kidnapped." This statement was reported by Reuters.

Prisoner exchange

Abu Ubaida's remarks came hours after prospects for a resumption of mediated ceasefire talks in Gaza increased. An official with knowledge of the situation reported that it had been decided to resume negotiations next week, following a meeting between the head of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, the director of the CIA and the prime minister of Qatar.

Despite claims by Hamas's armed wing that Israeli soldiers were captured, the Israeli military has denied that such an incident occurred. The contradictory statements come in a context of tensions and negotiations for a possible ceasefire in Gaza.
