Sainz's widow has been awarded the prestigious Lurra Bizkaia Saria award in the climate change category for her innovative project "Harri Green"

On June 17, the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium presented the Lurra Bizkaia Sariak 2024 awards. These awards highlight individuals, entities and companies that positively impact sustainability. This year, Viuda de Sainz, a member of the ICEBERG consortium, received the award in the category of Climate Change for his “Harri Green” project.

Innovation in the treatment and reuse of construction and demolition waste

The “Harri Green” project, a collaboration between Viuda de Sainz and Heidelberg Materials, was officially inaugurated in January in Zaramillo, Güeñes, Bizkaia. The facility can process 160.000 tonnes per year of construction and demolition waste (CDW) and 100.000 tonnes of steelmaking slag. Through an advanced three-stage crushing process, waste is transformed into high-quality recycled aggregates.

Contribution to the circular economy and sustainability in Bizkaia

"Harri Green" has become a benchmark for the circular economy and sustainability in the region. This plant significantly reduces the volume of waste sent to landfill and reduces the carbon footprint. In addition, it saves energy and minimizes the environmental impact by avoiding the extraction of materials from quarries. This project is a clear example of how innovation can contribute to sustainability.

The award was collected by José Manuel Baraibar, director of R&D&I at Viuda de Sainz, and presented by Ana Otadui, president of the General Assembly of Bizkaia.. The ceremony was attended by the president of the Basque Government, Iñigo Urkullu.

Positive impact on waste management and the environment

In practical terms, “Harri Green” transforms the way we manage construction and demolition waste. By converting waste into reusable materials, a more circular economy is promoted and the need to extract new resources is reduced.. These types of initiatives are essential to build a more sustainable future.

Furthermore, the collaboration between Viuda de Sainz and Heidelberg Materials highlights the importance of strategic alliances in sustainability projects. The success of “Harri Green” shows that, through cooperation, it is possible to achieve ambitious goals in environmental protection.
