In an event that disturbed the calm of the Biscayan town of Berriz, a 42-year-old man was arrested after stealing an SUV and causing a high-risk situation. This individual, who has a police record, not only unleashed a dangerous chase, but also endangered the life of an Ertzaina by almost running him over. In addition, the person involved doubled the permitted blood alcohol level, further complicating his legal situation.

The episode started when the authorities were alerted about the theft of the vehicle in Berriz. Shortly after, the SUV was spotted traveling at high speed on the BI-623 highway towards the port of Urkiola. Despite the agents' signals to stop, the driver ignored the instructions and continued his escape, forcing an agent to avoid him to avoid being run over.

The reckless journey did not stop there

The suspect continued his escape towards the urban area of Durango, where he drove in the opposite direction, increasing the risk for pedestrians and other vehicles. During his getaway, he also caused damage to urban infrastructure, crashing into pivots and fences in a construction zone.

The end of the chase came when the man abandoned the vehicle in the San Fausto neighborhood of Durango and tried to continue his escape on foot. However, his attempt was frustrated when he fell into the Atsarte River, from where he continued towards the adjacent orchards, where he was finally detained by the authorities.

In the tests carried out later, the detainee returned a result of 0,50 milligrams of alcohol per liter of exhaled air, exceeding the legal limit of 0,25 milligrams. He now faces accusations of alleged crimes against road safety for reckless driving, vehicle theft and attacks against law enforcement officers. His appearance in court is scheduled for the next few days, where he must answer for these serious charges.
